Since setting up his workshop overlooking Halifax Harbour in 2010, Ned Milburn has established himself as Atlantic Canada’s premier maker of classical and flamenco guitars. Ned has also become the “go-to guy” for top quality fretwork, setups, and repair for performing musicians and owners of fine quality hand-made instruments.
With a history of more than 30 years with the guitar, Ned has performed countless times in public in genres as diverse as classical, jazz, folk, and rock. During the 1990’s while working at one of Toronto’s specialty guitar stores, his focus grew towards building and repair. During this period, he learned from Canadian guitar building and repair greats including Grit Laskin, Linda Manzer, Sergei DeJong, and John LaRocque. Ned built his first classical guitar under the instruction of Bruce West – another Ontario based master craftsman who builds instruments of considerable power and tone.
While in Toronto working with John LaRocque, Ned repaired and setup guitars of famous Canadian icons including Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, and Blue Rodeo. Again with John LaRocque, Ned was invited to the Manuel Rodriguez family business guitar factory in Spain to give advice on fret-work. Since establishing his own business in Nova Scotia, Ned has worked on guitars of local performing musicians including Tom Terrell, Andrew Sneddon, Ray Legere, Daniel MacNeil, Bob Sutherby, and many more.
Whether building a new instrument from hand picked wood, setting up a new factory guitar, or restoring a vintage guitar, Ned’s craftsmanship shows his deep knowledge of the guitar and his quality craftsmanship with meticulous attention to fine detail.
